Attendance: To be added from sign in at the meeting, but note that it was good.
We heard reports from our 3 active subcommittees.
Technology Curriculum
Technology Plan
Audit and Process Review
Please see committee notes linked from "Committees" at left for a full picture.
Questions emerged about the timeline for our work .
It became clear from the discussion that committees need to work together.
We discussed the need for communication, and the lack of members on the planned committee on Membership and Communication. Addressing communication, we decided to put out a newsletter on or about March 1, informing the community of our purpose and reporting on our efforts to date.
Reports to the Board of Education were an idea floated.
Each committee will have a communications representative, names to be submitted to Connie Evelyn, to enable our internal and external communication.
Questions about the process of creating official ICSD curriculum were raised, i.e. does it need to be Board approved? This will be researched.
Meeting schedule: Fridays: 3/12 and 4/16 at 3:45 PM, this “light” schedule will allow committees to work relatively intensively over the coming period.
12-10-09
Mike Pliss, Joanne Church, Linda Knewstub, Andy Yale, Sophie Gluck, Mike Simons, Michael Peters, Sarah Brumberg, Dennis Charsky
Mike presented tech plan committee report. See committee notes.
He shared tech goals from other regional schools.
We discussed the need for a curriculum, 2 forks.
Assessment is important to the degree it is meaningful.
Can Tim Moon, as data specialist, help us?
Project Lead the Way is important to look at. Participation in that program and relation to student learning, attendance, etc. might be revealing.
Are students on the committee? (a couple, but perhaps we need more?)
What is the impact of having or not having technology in terms of their future. Alumni can be surveyed? Linda- we could do this 1 year out- a survey at the end of college first year. People liked this.
Andy shared progress of the Audit and Process Review Committee. See committee notes.
Basic skills assessment surveys will be valuable. They could be compared from year to year so we can see how we are advancing.
We had a brief wiki demo.
11/10/09
Attendees: Connie Evelyn, Shirley Kennedy, Cutter Crampton(CU), Mary DeSouza(CU), Annelise Schuepbach, Michael Peters, Jennifer Goodmark, Sophie Gluck, Mike Pliss, Linda Knewstub, Ryan Harrington, Dennis Charsky(IC), Steve Weissberg, Armin Heurich, Sarah Brumberg
Cutter and Mary described “Skills for Success,” a competency model for describing what is required to do well in positions- both technical and behavioral competencies are included. A behavior rubric is included. This provides a common language for thinking about job performance.
Q- With our effort to define a technology curriculum, and to make it match employer needs, what technology skills are needed?A- Technology tools: Filemaker and Access, Office programs, calendaring, web searching, email.
Possibly, some kind of internship program could be established between our local schools and CU.
Involvement in team-based activities in the classroom will help to set people up with requisite skills. Keyboarding and writing skills are essential. Negotiation and persuasion skills are prized. Social networking skills are an asset in some work venues.
In general, HS students are not sufficiently prepared. The behavioral skills are really important. Dave Richardson is a CU contact who might be useful in making skilled-trade type connections.
We engaged in a discussion about our committee structure. We reaffirmed the 4 committees defined at our previous meeting, and reestablished that we will approach curriculum with a double pronged approach-- embedding technology in core curricular areas and simultaneously defining technology skills to be mastered.
We decided to activate committees and proceed as follows:
Solicit committee membership interest, and interest in committee convening/chairing, via a web form
Designate a convener for each committee
Committees to meet prior to December 10- committees to further define what they see as their charge and to list areas to address, questions to answer and ways to proceed. This information is to be recorded under committee links in this wiki.
Next COLT meeting to occur at 3:45 on December 10, with the focus on hearing from committees relative to the above, and further refining and defining committee work.
9-24-2009
Attendees: Dennis Charsky(IC), Mike Pliss, Connie Evelyn, Diane Conuel, Elisa Miller-Out, Ryan Harrington, Rae Covey, Jane Koestler, Barry Derfel, Jennifer Groff, Armin Heurich , Andy Yale, Jennifer Goodmark, Roger Sevilla, Shirley Kennedy, Mike Simons
Membership- We want to represent stakeholders
Students- Armin will reach out to IHS students
Board Member- Connie will work on this.
Shirley Kennedy has some leads on individuals who might provide employer input to our committee.
Jennifer Goodmark- might include elementary curriculum chairs
Mike- Middle School principals
Rae- Let’s invite people when we have a task at hand for them.
Andy will work on a list with Bonnie and Connie, then consult with Roger about forming a Google Group
On 9/23 OCM BOCES hosted the CNYRIC Fall Open House:"Creating the 21st Century School District"
Shirley, Roger, Mike, Connie, and Jennifer Goodmark attended.
Connie: Excited by vendors –MLP and RTIM; Connie discovered that RTI-M has the capacity, for example, to resolve a longstanding issue in the district, storing and managing elementary literacy data.
Possibility for managing student data in the area of early literacy- RTIM can do this for us for free!!!
MyLearningPlan possibilities are large and we need to make more use of the capabilities. A company rep will come to ICSD in October and beyond.
Mike: also impressed with these tools, spoke to digital immigrant and digital native metaphor
Roger- posted some material on the wiki
and explored 21st century literacies, respecting youth culture, videoconferencing
Shirley- was looking to solve English Dept issues in her role as department chair. Accelerate U has some answers, Credit recovery- NOVA Net
Jennifer- What we saw can extend what we are already doing.
Tech Plan- where have we been and where are we going?
Technology curriculum development
District costs vs. revenues challenges plus the sense that technology is non-essential end up making technology a cut-able item at budget time.
If technology is curriculum embedded, it must be funded.
Connie introduced the Technology Plan in progress.
We reviewed goals statement.
Observations:
2009-2010 Board Priorities are in sync with our emerging technology plan.
The Board added technology as a resource, along withse data to drive our decisions.
We need to stay on top of trends, so our planning and work is current. How can we use social networking, for example, with all stakeholder groups?
Critical literacy is essential: Of what is new , what is good and adds value?
Increasing student performance and reducing disproportional outcomes might be more explicit in our goal statement, and aligned to Board goals. Technology is essential to these objectives.
We might change “improving student outcomes” to differentiate and maximize each student’s potential. This fits with Board’s language.
Statements about students of today and Desired Learning Environment add to the scope and meaning of the technology plan. A clear philosophy is expressed.
Roger suggests that we use technology tools as we work together in committee, and between meetings.
Subcommittees- Audit
Survey Work
We need to understand where we are to move forward. What are we using to work with data, professional development, and software students use.
Where is staff?
Where are students?
How do we measure up to ISTE’s essential conditions?
Curriculum Development
Should it be embedded in content areas and/or a standalone technology curriculum?
We need to use smart tools for developing and managing curriculum.
Strong support for both basic skills/benchmarks and embedded curriculum was expressed, i.e. we need to do both.
We need to give access to all- who is and is not getting access?
We need to be embedding it- www.indiancountrytoday.com
Professional development is important, nay essential, to implementing an embedded curriculum.
Students should be tapped into for their views of technology and curriculum.
Technology Plan Membership/Communication
We want to make sure we have a representative group and communicate what we are about and doing to the larger community. We would like to take some fieldtrips.
Binghamton
Oswego
We can do some videoconferencing to have virtual trips.
We will establish a page on the wiki for each workgroup. People can sign up for what they are interested in working on.
Draft Agenda:
Review of COLT membership
SINI RIC Field Trip -
6-22-2009
Attendees: Connie Evelyn, Andy Yale, Rae Covey, Mike Pliss, Sarah Brumberg, Roger Sevilla, Dale Perry, Karen Durfee, Barry Derfel, Shirley Kennedy, Steve Weissburg, Sophie Gluck
We discussed our vision and mission.... We agreed on a working vision: To optimize achievement and participation of ICSD students, curriculum must be embedded with technology that all members of the school community can use easily.
We still need to broaden our membership... Many took responsibility for inviting individuals from identified stakeholder groups. Special ed and support services, students, core curricular teachers, AIS, Curriculum chairs, Board, Parents, secondary administrator, HR for area employers
We discussed committees- add Tech Plan; Connie and Mike will work on a draft this summer. AY and RS too.
Also add a Communication committee- To spread word about tech plan, connection to content maps, etc.
Do we need a stand-alone tech curriculum, or can we do it with content maps- embedding in curriculum? How do we expose ALL teachers to the cutting edge technology their students need?
Connie will support 4 six hour days of work for some folk to draft the next ICSD Technology Plan. email her if you are interested.
5-29-2009
Attendees: Connie Evelyn, Andy Yale, Armin Heurich, Joanne Church, Ryan Harrington, Roger Sevilla, Linda Knewstub, Jane Koestler, Rae Covey, Jennifer Groff, Mike Pliss, Sarah Brumberg, Kim Fontana
Intros
Connie reports: At recent Board meetings, hardware was on chopping block. It is clear that technology will be under the microscope. We need to be clear about what we are doing.
Starting documents:
Lilly Moss and ICSD Librarians Tech Subcommittee report comparing tech plans, Binghamton Plan
Curriculum for technology- we need to develop this, and expeditiously.
Where are we?
Where do we wish to be?
How do we communicate this?
We discussed curriculum a bit; it has many complexities. Stand alone vs embedded in curriculum?
We need to think about this being ongoing work. Technology is changing; we need to be able to adapt.
All stakeholders need to be represented. Teachers need to be involved.
We need to have data about how we are using technology and its success and supporting student learning.
Aristotle is a tool we may use. This tracks how computers are used, in exacting detail.
How can we organize to do the work?
Invite more people. We will send Connie names of folk to invite.
Suggestions: Special ed and support services, students, core curricular teachers, , Curriculum chairs, Board, Parent, secondary administrator
Clarifying our vision= primary agenda item for next meeting
curriculum
establish our technology plan
Include hardware and network
Sean Brady-
Could we use his help? At what point?
Mike will provide some background as to where we are now.
Roger has some information about NYS Technology Planning he will make available.
NYS Librarian? isworking on plans to make all text books on eBooks within 10 years!! The landscape is changing.
